South Africa’s Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has warned that ongoing immigration tensions and rising anti-foreigner sentiment are starting to harm the country’s image across Africa, with both business and entertainment sectors already feeling the effects.

Kubayi said several South African companies operating in other African countries have faced backlash, forcing the government to step in by offering support and engaging directly with those affected.

She also highlighted growing challenges in the entertainment industry, noting that South African artists who frequently tour the continent are increasingly experiencing cancelled shows and lost income.

“The majority of South African artists perform on the continent, and many of them are seeing their gigs being cancelled. One artist did reach out to me to say all her gigs were cancelled on the continent. This is an income lost by a South African,” Kubayi said.

According to the minister, these developments are beginning to damage South Africa’s international reputation, prompting government efforts to reassure other African nations that South Africans should not be broadly labeled as xenophobic.

She emphasized that while the government will continue to enforce immigration laws against those living in the country illegally, individuals residing legally must be protected and treated fairly. Kubayi also urged communities to reject violence and attacks against foreign nationals.
