Afrobeats singer Brymo has urged top Nigerian music stars to step aside and allow space for younger artists, saying the industry’s focus on a few dominant names is stifling new talent.
During an interview on TVC, he criticised the popular “Big 3” tag—commonly used for Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy—arguing that it has helped entrench a cycle where a small group continues to control mainstream attention.
“We need to stop talking about how new artists don’t have substance,” Brymo said.
He also accused some established acts of trying to maintain permanent dominance in the industry instead of evolving or creating room for fresh voices.
“What happens to the 22-year-old artist who has recorded hits but has no opportunity to do more because the space is crowded with old guys who aren’t evolving?”
Brymo singled out Rema as one of the younger stars he believes should be leading global pop conversations, insisting that the current structure limits such possibilities.
“Right now, Rema should be like the biggest pop star in the country without any doubt,” he said.
He further dismissed the idea that radio play reflects true relevance, insisting that success in today’s music landscape goes beyond traditional media support.
“All this talk about Wizkid, 2Face, Olamide, Burna Boy… In the pop scene, wetin dem dey sing? You can plug yourself on radio, it does not mean anything. I don’t get played on radio that much, I still make a living off the music.”
