Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has granted a state pardon to 12 convicted inmates in a gesture of mercy ahead of the Ramadan and upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

The announcement came a day before Muslims worldwide are set to mark Eid al-Fitr on Friday, March 20, 2026. The state pardon was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday in Dutse by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Bello Fanini.

The decision followed the recommendation of the Jigawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, in line with Section 5(1) of the relevant law, and was executed under Section 212(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The inmates granted pardon are Ibrahim Adamu Isa, Sa’idu Umar, Adamu Musa, Habibu Musa, Yusuf Ahmed, Shu’aibu Adamu, Abdullahi Ya’u, Yahaya Jana’u, Abdul Hamisu, Garba Miko, Salisu Isa, and Aliyu Ibrahim.

Fanini described the pardon as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to promoting reconciliation, peace, and social reintegration.

“This act of mercy reflects our government’s dedication to reconciliation and reintegration,” he said, urging the beneficiaries to maintain good behaviour and avoid actions that could bring them back into conflict with the law.

He added that the government would support their reintegration, including providing assistance to help them resettle, and called on the public to welcome and assist the pardoned inmates.

“We expect them to reciprocate this gesture by being law-abiding citizens, and we urge the community to support their smooth return to society,” Fanini stated.
