Erling Haaland scored a late winner as Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on Tuesday to book a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.

The Norwegian striker struck in the 86th minute to settle a thrilling Round of 32 encounter after the Ivorians had fought back from a goal down. The victory sends Norway into the next round, where they will face Brazil.

Norway took the lead six minutes before half-time through Antonio Nusa, who produced a superb solo effort by dribbling past defenders before curling a brilliant finish beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Ivory Coast responded strongly after the break and piled pressure on the Norwegian defence. Nicolas Pépé and Franck Kessié both came close to scoring, but goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland made several crucial saves to preserve his side’s advantage.

The equaliser finally arrived in the 74th minute when substitute Amad Diallo burst into the penalty area and fired an unstoppable shot into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

With momentum on their side, the Elephants pushed for a winner, but their attacking approach left gaps at the back.

Norway punished them late in the game as Martin Ødegaard found Haaland inside the box, and the Manchester City forward kept his composure to slot home the winning goal.

Ivory Coast launched a late assault during seven minutes of added time, creating several dangerous situations, but Norway held on to secure victory and progress to the Round of 16, ending the African side’s World Cup campaign.
