Switzerland secured a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday.
The Swiss side took control of the contest in Vancouver, with Johan Manzambi producing a brilliant run down the left before setting up Breel Embolo, who finished from close range to open the scoring.
Just moments into the second half, Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s advantage after capitalising on a poor clearance from Rafik Belghali and firing through a crowded penalty area.
Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane managed to get a hand to the effort but could not prevent the ball from finding the back of the net.
The win sends Switzerland into the next round, where they will face the winners of Friday’s clash between Colombia and Ghana.
The defeat also means Algeria become the fifth African nation to exit the tournament in the Round of 32, joining Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal and South Africa. Morocco remain the only African team to reach the Round of 16.
