Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match, converting a penalty in the 68th minute to draw Portugal level after VAR awarded the spot kick.
Substitute Gonçalo Ramos later emerged as the match-winner, heading home the decisive goal to send Portugal through to the next round.
VAR also played a crucial role late in the game, ruling out what would have been Croatia’s equaliser by Josko Gvardiol for offside after a review by referee Espen Eskas.
