Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has removed all Fulham-related posts from his Instagram account, days after being jeered by some supporters during his substitution in the club’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace.
Iwobi was substituted in the 82nd minute of the encounter, with sections of the crowd responding with ironic cheers and jeers. The reaction came despite reports that the Nigerian midfielder had covered the second-highest distance among Fulham players during the match.
Meanwhile, Iwobi’s former Arsenal teammate, Emile Smith Rowe, has also cleared his Instagram profile of football-related posts, with both players’ accounts going dark as Fulham struggle at the beginning of the season.
The Cottagers have suffered defeats in each of their opening three Premier League matches, leaving them 19th in the standings. Only newly promoted Coventry City have recorded a poorer start based on goal difference.
Iwobi has started all three matches for Fulham, while Smith Rowe has featured as a substitute in two games and remained an unused substitute in the other.
This is not the first occasion Iwobi has removed Fulham-related content from his Instagram account. He took a similar step earlier in the year before restoring many of the posts towards the end of May.
The 30-year-old joined Fulham from Everton in 2023 under manager Marco Silva, having previously worked with the Portuguese coach at Everton. Since his arrival, Iwobi has developed into an important member of the squad both on and off the pitch, with teammates reportedly regarding him as an influential presence in the dressing room.
Iwobi also faced significant criticism following Nigeria’s defeat at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was subjected to widespread social media abuse that was criticised as unfounded. He responded at the time by deleting content from his Instagram account.
Fulham now face another difficult assignment, with the London club set to travel to Anfield this weekend to take on an unbeaten Liverpool side.
