Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Manchester United winger struck in the 90th minute to hand the Elephants all three points at Philadelphia Stadium, marking a memorable return to the World Cup for the African side, who are featuring in the tournament for the first time since 2014.

After a tightly contested encounter that saw both teams hit the woodwork, Diallo finally broke the deadlock. Wilfried Singo surged down the right flank before picking out the substitute, who calmly fired a left-footed effort past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.

The goal sparked celebrations among the Ivorian players as they secured a crucial victory in their quest to reach the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

Ivory Coast had come close earlier in the second half when Elye Wahi rattled the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Ecuador also struck the woodwork twice in the opening half through John Yeboah and Nilson Angulo.

Backed by a crowd of 68,274 at the stadium, the majority of whom were supporting Ecuador, La Tri pushed hard for a breakthrough and nearly found one in the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata unleashed a powerful long-range shot, only for goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to make an excellent save.

Ivory Coast, however, grew stronger as the game progressed, with Yan Diomande proving a constant threat down the wings. The Leipzig forward created several opportunities, including the move that nearly resulted in Wahi’s goal.

With Ecuador unable to capitalise on their chances, Diallo delivered the decisive moment late on, ensuring Ivory Coast began their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought and historic victory.
