Arsenal F.C. moved a step closer to ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley F.C. at the Emirates Stadium.
German midfielder Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 36th minute, heading home from a corner delivered by Bukayo Saka to hand Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial advantage in the title race.
The win sends Arsenal F.C. five points ahead of defending champions Manchester City F.C., who must beat Bournemouth on Tuesday to keep the race alive heading into the final day of the season.
Despite taking the lead, Arsenal were made to sweat for the result. Havertz was fortunate to avoid a red card in the second half after a dangerous challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu, but VAR chose not to intervene.
The Gunners created several opportunities throughout the match, with Saka and Leandro Trossard both coming close before the breakthrough eventually arrived from a set-piece.
Saka’s assist also marked his 50th in the Premier League, placing him among Arsenal’s top creators in league history behind club legends such as Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fàbregas and Mesut Özil.
After suffering a damaging defeat to Manchester City in April, Arteta’s men have responded strongly by winning four straight league matches without conceding a goal.
With a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain F.C. also on the horizon, Arsenal are now on the verge of one of the most memorable periods in the club’s history.
