Rural Electrification Agency Chairman Ayodele Fayose has offered an unusual explanation for Nigeria’s growing population, blaming the country’s unreliable electricity supply.
Fayose said the lack of electricity causes many Nigerians to remain indoors after darkness sets in, leaving them with few activities outside the home.
“When you don’t address the issue of electricity, by 7 o’clock it gets dark, and people start engaging with their wives, so the population doubles,” he said.
He explained that without adequate power, many people simply go to bed early because there are limited options for nightlife and other evening activities.
“The simple problem is that, because there is no electricity, people go to bed early. Their minds are already prepared for it. If this is the only option available, they simply stay at home,” Fayose added.
According to him, solving Nigeria’s electricity challenges would encourage more nightlife and give people more reasons to stay out of their homes in the evenings.
“But if we address the electricity problem, there will be nightlife,” he said.
