Adebayo Adelabu is set to resign from his position after receiving approval from Bola Tinubu to pursue his ambition of becoming governor of Oyo State.

The development followed a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, where Adelabu reportedly briefed the President on his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the minister also presented the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan during the meeting. He further outlined key achievements under his watch, including efforts to improve electricity generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and drive reforms aimed at boosting efficiency across the sector.

The statement confirmed that Adelabu will step down from office in the coming days, noting that the decision is part of efforts to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms within the power sector.

It also explained that the timing of his exit is linked to ongoing challenges in electricity supply, including gas shortages to power plants, pipeline maintenance works, and outstanding debts owed to gas suppliers, as well as the need to formally obtain presidential approval for both his resignation and political ambition in Oyo State.
