A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Colonel I.A. Muhammad, has been killed in an attack carried out by suspected fighters of Boko Haram in Monguno, Borno State.
The overnight assault reportedly targeted a military outpost as troops were preparing for a renewed offensive against the insurgents in the area. Colonel Muhammad was said to have been attached to the 242 Battalion, which operates in the troubled region.
Sources familiar with the incident said the colonel was among the officers caught in the attack, which also claimed several other soldiers during the operation.
A video purportedly showing the aftermath of the attack later surfaced on social media, though the Nigerian Army had yet to officially confirm details at the time of reporting.
The incident adds to recent losses recorded in ongoing operations against Boko Haram in the North-East.
