Ghana kicked off their FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama, thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi at Toronto Stadium.

The Black Stars endured a difficult build-up to the match, battling both off-field distractions and heavy rain before eventually securing all three points in their Group L opener.

Yirenkyi emerged as the hero in the fourth minute of added time, pouncing on a defensive mistake by Panama to slot home the winner and hand Carlos Queiroz’s side a priceless victory.

The result moves Ghana into second place in Group L, behind England, who earlier defeated Croatia 4-2 in Dallas.

Preparations for the game had been overshadowed by controversy after deputy captain Thomas Partey was reportedly denied entry into Canada. The midfielder’s request for emergency legal relief was rejected by a Federal Court judge on Tuesday as he continues to face legal proceedings in the United Kingdom.

Despite the controversy and the harsh weather conditions in Toronto, supporters from both nations turned out in large numbers, creating an electric atmosphere inside the stadium.

Clear chances were scarce in the opening half as both teams struggled to find rhythm on the rain-soaked pitch. Ghana’s aggressive approach saw Yirenkyi booked in the 15th minute after a mistimed challenge.

Queiroz made changes at the break, bringing on Benjamin Asare for Lawrence Ati Zigi in goal. As Panama began to threaten down the wings through Michael Amir Murillo and Yoel Bárcenas, the Ghana coach introduced Brandon Thomas-Asante and Abdul Fatawu in place of Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah to inject fresh energy into his side.

Panama also reshuffled their lineup, sending on José Fajardo and Ismael Díaz as both teams pushed for a breakthrough in the closing stages.

Just when the game appeared destined for a draw, Yirenkyi capitalised on Panama’s lapse in concentration deep into stoppage time, firing Ghana to victory and giving the Black Stars a dream start to their World Cup journey.
