Enzo Fernández’s free-kick helped Chelsea secure a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, putting an end to their six-match losing streak in the Premier League and earning caretaker manager Calum MacFarlane his first point in charge.

Liverpool stay fourth on the table with 59 points from 36 matches, moving closer to Champions League qualification, while Chelsea remain ninth with 49 points from the same number of games.

The hosts went ahead through a stunning long-range effort from Ryan Gravenberch, who fired home from the edge of the box. However, Chelsea responded with improved intensity, and Fernández levelled matters when his set-piece delivery evaded everyone and dropped into the bottom corner.

Both teams had goals disallowed for offside, while Liverpool came close to a winner as Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk both hit the woodwork during sustained pressure late in the game.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, speaking after the match, said the team’s effort was encouraging despite not getting maximum points.

“I think the effort today was really good. I don’t think it was probably our best moments, but we showed if we play together and if we play together then we have a good level.

“We aren’t happy because we wanted the three points, but we are happy that we showed we’re a really good team if we put in the effort and fight together. Hopefully we can learn from this game and play well in these last few games.”
