Girona have been relegated from LaLiga after failing to secure the win they needed on the final day of the season.

The club’s hopes of survival were dashed after a 1-1 draw at home against Elche, despite favourable results elsewhere. Osasuna and Levante both suffered defeats, meaning Girona would have stayed up with a victory.

Elche went ahead through Alvaro Rodriguez before Girona captain Arnau Martinez equalised, but the hosts could not find the winning goal that would have kept them in the top flight. The result was enough to guarantee Elche’s survival.

Osasuna lost 1-0 to Getafe, while Levante were beaten 2-1 by Real Betis. Even so, both teams narrowly avoided relegation after ending the campaign level on 42 points with Mallorca, who defeated already relegated Real Oviedo 3-0.

Osasuna remained above the relegation zone on goal difference, while Levante survived thanks to a superior head-to-head record.

The relegation battle proved incredibly tight, with only two points separating Girona in 19th place from Sevilla in 13th. Sevilla also ended the season with defeat after losing 1-0 to Celta Vigo.

Celta’s win secured qualification for next season’s Europa League, while Getafe booked a place in the Conference League play-offs after their victory over Osasuna.

Despite finishing seventh, Getafe ended the season with a negative goal difference of minus six, scoring only 32 goals in 38 league games.
