Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale has recounted how Afrobeats superstar Davido discovered her son, Mayorkun, and helped launch his music career after stumbling on a cover song he posted online.

Speaking about the experience, Adewale said everything began when Mayorkun visited his cousin in Lekki and recorded a cover of Davido’s hit song “The Money” in a home studio.

She explained that the cover quickly gained traction on social media and eventually caught Davido’s attention.

“He posted it on the internet and before you know it, it went viral. He did a cover of the ‘Give me the money’ song and posted it on his Instagram, it went viral and got to Davido,” she said.

According to her, the family was initially skeptical when Davido reached out, unsure whether the message was genuine.

“At first, they were like, ‘Is it him or not?’ But the moment they recognised his voice, they jumped in excitement.”

Adewale said Davido soon called Mayorkun personally, expressed interest in his music and even requested his clothing measurements before surprising him with a large box of gifts.

“So Mayowa sent it, and before you know it, Davido gave him a whole box of gifts,” she recalled.

The actress revealed that Mayorkun and one of his friends were later invited to Davido’s residence, where they met the singer for the first time.

“When I got there, the boy was so pleasant and very respectful. ‘Mummy, Mummy,’ he kept saying,” she said.

She added that Davido later invited Mayorkun back to the studio, where he recorded “Eleko,” the song that eventually became his breakout hit.

According to Adewale, the recording process took place over two visits and came naturally to Mayorkun, who had been writing poems and songs long before his rise to fame.

She noted that her son spent years learning under Davido’s mentorship before eventually carving out his own path and becoming one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
