Iranian state media has reported that the Strait of Hormuz has once again come under what it described as “strict control,” with movement through the strategic shipping route now reportedly restricted.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting said the new directive means vessels passing through the waterway would now require approval from Iranian authorities, effectively tightening oversight of one of the world’s most important oil transit corridors.

The announcement follows a brief period in which the strait was reopened after a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, a development that had raised hopes of improved stability in global maritime trade.

However, Iranian military authorities said the situation had changed again, accusing the United States of failing to meet commitments linked to the lifting of restrictions on Iranian maritime activity.

In a statement from Iran’s joint military command, officials said Tehran had previously agreed to allow limited passage for oil tankers and commercial vessels as part of negotiations, but claimed those arrangements had been undermined.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, following previous agreements in negotiations, has agreed in good faith to the managed passage of a limited number of oil tankers and commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement said.

It further alleged that Washington’s continued enforcement of what it called a blockade had forced Iran to reinstate tighter control over the waterway.

“The control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state, and this strategic strait is under the strict management and control of the armed forces,” it added.

Iran warned that the restrictions would remain in place unless the United States guarantees what it described as full freedom of movement for Iranian vessels travelling in and out of the region.

The Strait of Hormuz Strait of Hormuz is a vital global shipping route, with a significant portion of the world’s oil passing through it, making any disruption a major concern for international energy markets.
