Kylian Mbappe made World Cup history by becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer, despite France’s defeat to England in the third-place playoff at Miami Stadium.
The French captain scored twice in the second half to take his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals, surpassing Lionel Messi’s record.
England dominated the opening half and raced into a 4-0 lead, with Bukayo Saka scoring twice before halftime.
Mbappe sparked France’s response by finding the net in the 48th minute, a goal that also moved him ahead of Messi in the race for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot. Bradley Barcola then made it 4-2 after finishing a pass from Mbappe.
The 27-year-old struck again in the 66th minute to complete his brace and continue France’s comeback.
His two goals took his tally to 10 at the 2026 World Cup, putting him in front in the Golden Boot race while cementing his place as the competition’s all-time top scorer with 22 goals.
