Award-winning fashion designer Veekee James has shared the inspiring story of her mother’s unwavering dedication, revealing that she chose to remain a widow after losing her husband so she could devote herself completely to raising her children.
Speaking about her upbringing, Veekee said she never witnessed her mother date another man after her father’s death. She recalled that when their pastor suggested remarriage, her mother politely declined, insisting that caring for her children was more important.
“I’ve never seen my mom date any man before. Since I lost my dad, my mom has never slept outside the house if it’s not night vigil. When my dad passed, my pastor asked if she wanted to remarry and she said no, she wanted to take care of us, her kids.”
She went on to describe how her mother worked tirelessly in Ajegunle as a tailor, sewing clothes for numerous clients to provide for the family. Veekee added that it was her mother who introduced her to tailoring and constantly encouraged her to stay focused rather than depend on men.
“My mom hustled so hard in Ajegunle. She made clothes for so many people. She taught me tailoring and advised me not to follow men.”
According to Veekee, the sacrifices, work ethic and values her mother instilled in her became the foundation of the successful woman she is today.
