A 25-year-old Nigerian student studying in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to three years in prison after attempting to meet who he believed was a 14-year-old girl for sex.

The student, identified as Anderson Ishiekwene, was arrested in Washington after engaging in sexually explicit online conversations with what he thought was a teenage girl. The profile, however, was operated by online child protection vigilantes.

According to reports, Ishiekwene was taken into custody eight days after the conversations began.

He later admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and was also convicted of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

Ishiekwene had travelled to the UK from Nigeria in August 2025 on a student visa and was living in Sunderland at the time of the offence.

Following the completion of his three-year prison sentence, he is expected to be deported to Nigeria.
