Adams Oshiomhole, former Edo State governor and senator, has stirred widespread reactions online following a controversial remark about elections and democratic participation.
Speaking at a public event, Oshiomhole said:
“I think that, for democracy to flourish, only people who can accept the pain of rigging, sorry of defeat should participate in an election.”
The comment quickly gained traction on social media, with many Nigerians focusing on what appeared to be a slip of tongue, as he seemed to say “rigging” before correcting himself to “defeat.”
The statement triggered mixed reactions online, with some users mocking the remark while others criticised it as careless wording that could be interpreted as normalising electoral malpractice in Nigeria.
