The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been asked to appear before investigators over allegations he made against Assistant Inspector General of Police Moshood Jimoh.
The Force also revealed that AIG Jimoh has been summoned as part of its internal investigation into the claims.
The update was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu. According to the statement, the Assistant Inspector General overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja directed that Jimoh be invited for questioning.
The police further stated that the FCID had earlier written to VeryDarkMan on July 30, requesting that he appear before the department with evidence to support the accusations he made publicly.
According to the Force, both invitations demonstrate its commitment to investigating allegations of misconduct without regard to the rank of the officer involved or the identity of the complainant.
The controversy stems from remarks made by VeryDarkMan concerning Jimoh, who heads the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos, and issues surrounding the Ajiran double murder case.
The police maintained that the criminal case referenced by the activist had already been investigated and taken to court after legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
It stressed that the matter is now before a competent court and should not be influenced by public commentary or media campaigns.
“The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved,” the statement said.
The police also noted that disciplinary matters involving officers are handled in accordance with the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other established administrative procedures.
While recognising citizens’ right to demand accountability and express their opinions, the Force cautioned against making unverified or defamatory allegations and urged VeryDarkMan to honour the FCID invitation and cooperate with the investigation while allowing the courts to determine the case.
