First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on voters in the South-East to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during her official visit to Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Wednesday, the First Lady said she was committed to seeing a better Nigeria in her later years and would continue working alongside the President towards achieving that goal.
“Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better.
“I want to enjoy Nigeria at old age, so I will work for Nigeria, for my old age,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu explained that the women empowerment initiative was being carried out through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with plans to reach 18,500 women nationwide when fully implemented.
She said 500 women from each of the five South-East states would benefit from the programme through the distribution of business-support items such as generators, industrial grinding machines, gas cylinders and ovens.
However, she disclosed that Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma had provided additional empowerment materials for 2,000 women in the state, increasing the number of beneficiaries in Imo to 2,500.
In appreciation of the governor’s intervention, the First Lady announced an additional N100,000 cash grant for each beneficiary of the empowerment programme in the state.
She said the initiative was aimed at acknowledging the contributions of women to nation-building and economic advancement.
“Recognising the typical role women play in nation building, this is in line with the agenda of Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises economic growth and sustainable development for all Nigerians, particularly women,” she said.
Tinubu encouraged the beneficiaries to make responsible use of the items and financial support provided to improve their businesses, livelihoods and families.
“Let it serve as a foundation for creating a better life for you and your family,” she said.
In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma praised the First Lady for her contributions to national development and her efforts towards improving the welfare of Nigerians.
He said Imo residents appreciated what he described as the President’s achievements and expressed their readiness to support his return to office in 2027.
Uzodimma also welcomed the Federal Government’s empowerment initiative, describing it as an effort aimed at strengthening women’s economic independence and dignity.
According to the governor, residents of Imo had taken note of the Federal Government’s infrastructure and development projects across the state.
“Let him know that Imo people are happy with him, that we are happy with his performance. Let him know that he is doing very well, that we stand with him and that we deeply appreciate his resolute commitment to a stronger, more prosperous, safer and more united Nigeria,” Uzodimma said.
He pledged the state’s support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
“I assure you that we will reciprocate this love. We will stand firmly behind our beloved President in January 2027. We will speak with one united, unequivocal voice to stand by those who have consistently stood by us,” he said.
During her visit, the First Lady was also honoured with the chieftaincy title of Osodieme by the traditional institution in Imo State.
