Sadio Mane has announced his retirement from international football following Senegal’s heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old Al-Nassr forward brought an end to his international career after Senegal threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium after extra time in the Round of 32.
Mane featured in all four of Senegal’s matches at the tournament, rounding off a remarkable 14-year international career. He leaves as one of the country’s greatest footballers, having made 132 appearances and scored 55 goals for the Lions of Teranga.
In a statement released through Senegalese outlet Le Quotidien, the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star expressed gratitude to his country and supporters.
“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag.
“I gave the very best of myself and I always fought fiercely for our homeland.
“Your constant support has been the engine of my success.”
Mane also revealed his desire to remain involved in Senegalese football, saying he hopes to contribute in a coaching or administrative role.
“Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the nation, whether within a technical staff, on the sidelines as a coach, or in the governing bodies.
“Long live Senegal.”
