Tottenham Hotspur boosted their hopes of surviving in the Premier League after battling to a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Monday night.
The result moved Spurs two points above fellow relegation-threatened side West Ham, with only two matches left to play this season.
After a goalless first half, Tottenham finally broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half through Mathys Tels. The forward reacted quickest after Pedro Porro’s corner was cleared into his path, calmly firing a long-range effort into the far corner for his first goal since January 7.
However, the hosts were unable to hold on to their lead as Tels later conceded a penalty following a dangerous high challenge on Ethan Ampadu inside the box.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up and confidently converted from the spot with 15 minutes remaining to earn Leeds a valuable point.
Tottenham had entered the match in high spirits following back-to-back victories and controlled much of the contest, especially in the opening half, but failed to make their dominance count.
Spurs will now face Chelsea away before hosting Everton in their final game of the campaign. West Ham, meanwhile, travel to Newcastle before taking on Leeds on the last day of the season.
One of the two clubs is expected to join already relegated Burnley and Wolves in next season’s Championship.
