Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla has cancelled her planned concert in Lagos after the Nigerian stop was removed from the official schedule of her APOP World Tour.
An updated version of the tour itinerary released on Friday no longer includes the Lagos show, which had originally been fixed for December 22. However, her performances across Europe, North America and South Africa remain unchanged.
Before the update, Tyla had unveiled Lagos as the only Nigerian destination on the tour, with the concert expected to take place before the final shows in Cape Town on January 4 and Johannesburg on January 9.
The decision follows widespread reactions from Nigerians after the Lagos date was announced. While many fans looked forward to the concert, others urged that it be cancelled in protest against the continued xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
The issue also sparked debate online, with some insisting that entertainers should not be punished for the actions of political leaders or individuals.
Political activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was among those who defended the singer, arguing that Tyla should not be blamed for xenophobic attacks or made to bear responsibility for issues beyond her control.
