Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has inaugurated a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 400-level student, Osunlakin Grace, and announced a series of measures aimed at improving healthcare services across its campuses.
The decisions followed a meeting between the university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Odunayo Adeboye, and the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone, over the death of the Criminology and Security Studies student and other student welfare concerns.
The outcome of the meeting was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the NANS Southwest Coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah.
“The welfare, safety, and well-being of students across the Southwest remain the foremost priority of the NANS Southwest leadership,” Josiah said.
He added that while NANS remains committed to working with university authorities through dialogue, it would continue to speak out whenever students’ welfare is threatened.
Expressing condolences over the incident, Adeboye described Osunlakin’s death as a painful loss to the university community.
As part of the reforms, the Vice-Chancellor announced plans to establish a new health centre at the Ifetedo Campus, where the deceased was studying, while upgrading healthcare facilities across other campuses.
He also revealed that all university medical centres would begin operating 24 hours a day to ensure students have uninterrupted access to medical care.
Adeboye further appealed to students and their parents to disclose any underlying health conditions, explaining that the university had encountered several cases of students with serious medical challenges unknown to their families, making emergency treatment more difficult.
