Singer Ruger has responded to criticism of his latest song after a woman took to social media to wish him dead over the lyrics.
Rather than ignore the reaction, the singer questioned why the lyrics had been taken so seriously, particularly after some listeners described the song as misogynistic and homophobic.
Ruger first expressed surprise that someone would go as far as wishing him dead because of a song, writing:
“So this girl is wishing i d!e so she’ll have a stable mental health 🧍🏾”?
He then challenged those criticising the song to point out exactly what they considered offensive.
“What part of this lyric is misogynistic or homophobic or is it because it’s Ruger singing it I’m just saying a girl can steal your girl away wtf”
According to the singer, the song was simply describing a woman who makes her own choices and is attracted to whoever she wants.
Ruger later addressed the woman directly, saying her focus should be elsewhere rather than on his lyrics. He also made a personal remark about her appearance and eating habits.
“I think i get a pass for her wishing me de.ad. So apologies to the feminists and body positivity activists but this girl is worried about the wrong thing. She should be worried about her high intake of okpa she’s on the verge of getting a triple chin”, he noted.
The singer also expressed disappointment that some Nigerians had joined the criticism without taking time to understand the lyrics of the song.
“Anyways, anyone is free to jump on the Ruger hate train. Get your TikTok and X bread from it. The only hurtful thing is that, it’s mostly my own people (Nigerians) that wouldn’t even check my lyrics properly before they slander it. TOTO was all they needed to hear to hate 🧍🏾”, he stated.
To further explain his message, Ruger shared the lyrics he said were being misunderstood:
“Aaahhhnnn
Kuk dah tin
She like what she like
She want what she want
Me respect her choice
Block her ear from the noise
She hang with the boys
But she shun fuck the boys
The boys like her
She just want the girls
The girls also want her i can tell
I see i see”.
I think i get a pass for her wishing me dead. So apologies to the feminists and body positivity activists but this girl is worried about the wrong thing. She should be worried about her high intake of okpa she’s on the verge of getting a tripple chin https://t.co/Q6ZwPPe1XI
