A woman rescued after being abducted in Woro, Kwara State, has shared details of her time in captivity, including how she helped pregnant fellow captives deliver their babies without proper medical equipment.
The survivor, who said she is a nurse, explained that life in captivity was difficult, with the abductors sometimes withholding food and moving around the victims’ location.
She said she remained particularly cautious because she had to protect herself and her children while they were being held.
Despite the harsh conditions, the nurse said she assisted about 10 pregnant women during childbirth. With no gloves available, she claimed she had to use her bare hands to help them deliver their babies.
She further revealed that her captors wanted her to stay with them, but she refused because she wanted to return home and continue her nursing work.
The woman also recounted the attack on her community, alleging that the assailants killed several residents, including her elder and younger brothers.
According to her, the attackers blamed her father for refusing to allow them access to the village and later carried out the deadly attack.
She said she recognised the attackers as Boko Haram members when they arrived at her home because of their appearance and clothing.
The survivor was also asked whether she or other women in captivity had been sexually assaulted. She denied any case of rape or sexual abuse and clarified that the pregnant women she encountered had already been pregnant before their abduction.
Recounting the ordeal, she said:
“Sometimes they will give up food, sometimes they will move to us. That’s why we used to sleep with our children.
“I’m also a nurse. I just used to help pregnant women doing delivery. I helped like 10 women for delivery without gloves. I used my hand to help them.
“But at last, they let me know. They want to keep me, that I have to stay with them, but I said no. I want to come back home to do my work.
“They always say that they are working for religion. They said that those people that they are attacking are working with the Quran. That is the reason why they entered our village and killed everybody.
“They even killed my brother, my senior brother and my junior brother. They said it was because of my dad because my dad did not allow them to come to our village.”
She added:
“The day that they came, they did not meet any soldier. They just came to our house. Suddenly, when I saw them, I knew that they were Boko Haram. They dressed in a way that I knew they were Boko Haram.”
On whether there was any sexual assault during their captivity, she said:
“No. No case of rape or sexual assault, no.”
She also confirmed that the pregnant women she helped were already pregnant before they were kidnapped.
