Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has stepped down from his role as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State governorship in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Tuggar, who belongs to the All Progressives Congress, is said to have tendered his resignation on Monday, just hours before the deadline issued by the presidency.

Bola Tinubu had earlier instructed all political appointees with ambitions to run for office to resign their positions no later than March 31, 2026.

The directive, communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of party primaries for the 2027 elections.

Following this move, a wave of similar resignations is anticipated as other appointees eyeing elective positions rush to comply with the deadline.
