Akon has revealed why he chose not to sign Canadian rap superstar Drake, saying the rapper’s financial demands at the time were beyond what he was willing to pay.
Speaking about the missed opportunity, the Senegalese-American singer and music executive explained that Drake wanted a $1 million signing fee, prompting him to walk away from the deal.
Akon said he later turned his attention to Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid after being introduced to him by Banky W, a decision he believes paid off.
“I missed the chance to sign Drake because I didn’t want to pay the $1 million he was asking for. Then Banky W introduced me to Wizkid, I signed him instead, and helped break him into the American market,” Akon said.
Although he missed the opportunity to work with Drake before his rise to global fame, Akon said signing Wizkid proved to be a worthwhile decision.
Wizkid has since become one of Africa’s biggest music exports, enjoying worldwide success and collaborating with several international stars, including Drake. Akon’s remarks have since sparked conversations among fans about how differently music history might have unfolded had he signed the Canadian rapper.
