Nigerian skitmaker and content creator Zicsaloma has encouraged young people to prioritise learning practical skills, saying it is the most reliable path to financial independence.
In a viral video making the rounds on social media, the comedian said many youths remain unemployed or financially dependent because they have no valuable or marketable skills. He noted that simply having a university degree is not enough if it cannot be translated into real-life opportunities.
Zicsaloma also lamented that some graduates cannot effectively use the knowledge they acquired in school, while others lack basic skills such as driving, cooking, computer literacy, graphic design or artificial intelligence.
The content creator revealed that he regularly receives messages from people asking him for money. He recalled asking one person, who had repeatedly sought financial help, what they could do for a living, only to be told they had no skill.
He advised young people to stop chasing handouts and instead look for experienced people who can teach them a trade. According to him, skills such as barbering, hairdressing, driving and catering can become profitable careers if taken seriously.
“You know, you can’t have money if you’re not doing anything. Like you’re redundant. You don’t have a skill. You don’t stand a chance. Or your chance is almost zero.”
“You can’t drive. You can’t cook. You’re not a chef. You are not computer literate. You don’t know graphic design. You don’t do AI. You done nothing.”
“Some of you even though they’re graduates. You don’t even know what you studied. So you studied English, you can’t even construct proper sentences. You studied accountancy. You don’t know how to bookkeep.”
“I said what can you do… The person said nothing. What can you do? The person could not think of anything.”
“Nobody will keep giving you money forever. You always be a burden to people. People always run away from you.”
“Instead of disturbing people for money, disturb people you can learn skills from… You could be a chef, you could be a driver. Just start from somewhere.”
“Your goal should be a skill… Learn properly. You can become a millionaire from that skill. Just know that if you’re at home and you’re redundant, you do not stand a chance.”
