Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken a swipe at Nigeria’s political landscape, alleging that corruption allegations against politicians often disappear once they join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obi argued that Nigerian political parties are no longer guided by ideology but by personal interests and political convenience.
“For me, there is no political party in Nigeria today that has an ideology. There is none. Otherwise, the ideology of the APC would be that if you are corrupt and you move to the APC, you are no longer corrupt,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that the country needs leaders with integrity, competence and compassion, rather than politicians who frequently switch parties for personal benefit.
Obi also accused the APC-led government of deliberately weakening opposition parties, claiming that the internal crises affecting the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and previously the Labour Party (LP), were part of a broader effort to silence opposition voices.
“The president said it, and it is happening. When opposition parties are having problems, that is his wish. Because of it, they are destroying the judiciary,” Obi alleged.
He pledged that if elected president, his administration would allow opposition parties to function independently without interference from the government or regulatory agencies.
Obi further dismissed suggestions that endorsements from state governors would automatically secure President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, insisting that governors do not always represent the true wishes of the people they govern.
