The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has formally terminated the appointment of his longtime lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, ending their years-long legal relationship.

In a letter dated July 22, 2026, from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu stated that he had already informed Ejiofor verbally of his decision and was issuing the letter to formally document the termination.

Kanu also revoked every authority previously granted to Ejiofor to act or speak on behalf of him, his family, or IPOB. According to him, the lawyer is no longer authorised to represent the group or make statements in its name.

Explaining his decision, Kanu said the IPOB Code of Conduct reserves the power to appoint, suspend, or remove principal officers solely to the leader of the organisation, unless such authority has been officially delegated. He added that no individual, committee, or former official has the right to appoint or retain legal representatives for IPOB outside the provisions of the group’s constitution.

He further instructed Ejiofor to immediately stop issuing press statements, granting interviews, making social media posts, or carrying out any public engagements on behalf of him, his family, or IPOB.

Kanu also directed the lawyer to cease presenting himself as his legal counsel or an attorney representing IPOB in court, at public functions, or in any other capacity. He equally asked Ejiofor to withdraw from all pending legal matters in which he is still listed as his counsel.

In addition, Kanu reminded the lawyer of his duty to protect confidential information obtained during the course of their professional relationship. He warned that disclosing or using such information without his written approval, except where required by law or a court order, could amount to professional misconduct and expose Ejiofor to disciplinary proceedings before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), alongside other possible legal consequences.
