The University of Lagos has officially reinstated its Students’ Union, swearing in a new Executive Council a decade after the body was suspended.

The union was originally suspended on April 24, 2016, following widespread student protests over issues such as water shortages and inconsistent electricity supply, which the university said disrupted academics and posed security risks.

Its return was confirmed in March after successful elections were conducted to fill leadership positions across the student body.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka, with Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola presiding. Hall executives and representatives from the Institute of Continuing Education were also inaugurated.

Ogunsola urged the new leaders to view their roles as a service to students and the wider university community. She noted that the previous suspension was necessary due to violent protests that damaged property and disrupted academic activities.

She expressed confidence that the newly elected executives would champion responsible leadership, constructive dialogue, and disciplined engagement, calling the inauguration a key milestone in strengthening student governance and university administration.
