Months after a devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of his wife and six children, Kano resident Haruna Bashir has taken another step towards rebuilding his life.
Bashir was among 1,500 couples brought together under a mass wedding programme organised by the Kano State Government. During the ceremony, he married Nabila Kabiru Yunusa.
His remarriage comes after he suffered an unimaginable loss in January 2026. Bashir’s wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children were killed after attackers reportedly broke into their home in Chiranchi, Dorayi, while he was away at the market.
Left to mourn his entire immediate family, Bashir later received a visit from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who offered several forms of assistance to help him start over.
The governor pledged to provide him with a new house in Amana City, welfare support, sponsorship for Hajj and Umrah, as well as assistance towards remarriage.
Bashir accepted the intervention and also decided to give up his former home for conversion into an Islamiyya school.
His new marriage was facilitated through the state’s mass wedding initiative, which targets people who face financial challenges in getting married, particularly widows and other vulnerable members of society.
Under the programme, participating brides received money to cover dowry expenses, support for starting small businesses and household items to help establish their new homes.
Governor Yusuf served as the guardian for the male participants during the ceremony, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides.
For Bashir, the wedding represents a new beginning after months marked by grief and profound personal loss.
