The Osun State Government has removed Oba Gbenga Joseph Oloyede as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu with immediate effect.

The decision was announced on Tuesday in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, who said it followed consultations, legal scrutiny, and approval by the State Executive Council.

According to the government, the action was taken in line with the Osun State Chiefs Law (as amended) and other relevant legal provisions governing traditional institutions in the state.

The statement linked the development to the monarch’s conviction in the United States, stating:

“Oba Oloyede was convicted in the United States over offences related to COVID-19 fraud and is currently serving a prison sentence.

“The decision was reached after due consultation, legal consideration and approval by the State Executive Council.”

The government also confirmed the withdrawal of all instruments of office previously held by the monarch, including the staff of office.

It added that the throne of the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu has now been declared vacant.

According to the statement, the government will later announce the procedure for selecting a new traditional ruler in accordance with established customary and legal processes.
