Former Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, has opened up about a personal incident that led him to stop drinking alcohol entirely.
He explained in a video from a church event that even after becoming a committed Christian and actively preaching, he still occasionally consumed alcohol, believing it was not inconsistent with his faith. He said he often leaned on the biblical story of Jesus turning water into wine to justify the habit.
According to him, everything changed after a Sunday service he conducted. On his way home, he stopped at a restaurant to get a drink, but what he saw there stayed with him. Several people who were drinking quickly hid their bottles and glasses as soon as they noticed him.
He said the reaction made him suddenly aware of how much influence he carried and how even his private choices could send a message to others.
That experience, he noted, forced him to rethink his actions and reflect on the idea that not everything permissible is necessarily beneficial or appropriate for someone in his position.
From that day, he decided to stop drinking alcohol completely. He said he has kept to that decision for many years, describing it as a defining shift in his personal discipline and spiritual life, and pointing to a past moment in Mogadishu as part of the broader journey.
