Teachers across public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State have been directed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to embark on an indefinite strike beginning today over the continued abduction of their colleagues and pupils.
In a statement issued by the union’s national leadership, the NUT said the action became necessary due to the prolonged captivity of the victims and the uncertainty surrounding their rescue.
The statement, signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman Hassan Fatai and Secretary Salami Olukayode, expressed concern that the situation had left teachers fearful and anxious, while also discouraging many parents from sending their children to school.
The union noted that the insecurity had increased tension in affected communities and raised serious concerns about the safety of both educators and students.
According to the NUT, the strike is aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to the urgent need for stronger efforts to secure the release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
As a result, all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State have been instructed to withdraw their services from June 1 until further notice.
The development comes as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the deployment of a special security team to intensify efforts toward rescuing the victims.
The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare, security and well-being of teachers and learners across the country.
