Thailand’s royal household has announced the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Vajiralongkorn, at the age of 47.
The princess had remained in a coma for more than three years after collapsing while exercising her dogs in December 2022, an incident that shocked the nation and raised concerns about the future of the Thai monarchy.
Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished members of the royal family, Bajrakitiyabha built a distinguished career as a lawyer, diplomat and advocate for criminal justice reform. She previously served as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria and was actively involved in initiatives aimed at improving the country’s legal and prison systems.
Known for her close relationship with her father, King Vajiralongkorn, the princess was often seen as a key figure within the royal household. Although the 73-year-old monarch has yet to formally designate an heir, Bajrakitiyabha was considered by many observers to be an influential figure who could have played a significant role in the monarchy’s future.
Her death marks a major loss for Thailand’s royal family and the country, where she was admired for her public service, intellect and dedication to social causes.
