A Federal Government-appointed Independent Investigative Panel has raised concerns over the treatment of crossdresser Okuneye Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, during his time in custody, revealing that he was allegedly kept in a soundproofed cell and granted privileges outside standard correctional rules.
According to the panel’s report, Bobrisky was housed in specially arranged conditions across two custodial centres in Lagos, with access to amenities and allowances described as far beyond what is permitted under Nigerian correctional regulations.
The report stated that he enjoyed privileges including the use of mobile phones while in custody, as well as access to a specially arranged cell environment. It further noted that such treatment was inconsistent with established prison procedures.
Bobrisky was sentenced on April 12, 2024, for naira abuse and completed his six-month jail term, being released on August 5. However, controversy erupted weeks later after social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, released an audio recording allegedly capturing Bobrisky discussing claims of bribery involving officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The allegations prompted the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to establish an investigative panel on September 30, chaired by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalena Ajani, to examine the claims.
In its findings, the panel detailed what it described as extraordinary arrangements at both the Medium Security and Maximum Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos. These included a private-style cell setup with amenities such as a television, fridge, carpet, humidifier, improved lighting, and bathroom facilities.
It also alleged that Bobrisky was placed on self-feeding, with family members permitted to deliver meals and visit frequently, often without strict limitations.
At the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, the panel further reported that his cell was decorated and included a large bed, television, and other furnishings, while an inmate was assigned to attend to his personal needs.
The report also raised concerns over transport arrangements, stating that he was moved between facilities using an official operational vehicle accompanied by senior correctional officials.
One of the most notable observations was the discovery of a soundproofed or padded door in his cell, which the panel said was unusual and required further investigation to determine its purpose, including whether it was linked to prohibited mobile phone use.
The panel concluded that there was a need for further investigation by security agencies into possible bribery allegations and recommended that relevant authorities consider prosecution where necessary, including for alleged corruption and reputational damage to correctional institutions.
