Peter Obi has finally dragged his former ally, Kenneth Okonkwo, to court, demanding N5 billion in damages over allegations he says damaged his reputation.

The lawsuit was filed on Thursday at the Onitsha Judicial Division of the Anambra State High Court.

The legal action follows comments made by Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), during a Channels Television programme. He accused Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), of collecting N10 million from House of Representatives aspirants and influencing the outcome of the party’s primary election.

Before approaching the court, Obi had issued a seven-day ultimatum, asking Okonkwo to retract the claims, apologise publicly, and pay N5 billion in compensation. After the demands were reportedly ignored, the former Anambra State governor proceeded with the suit.
