A California jury has ordered singer Chris Brown to pay $13 million in damages to his former housekeeper after finding him liable in a civil lawsuit stemming from a dog attack at his home.
The lawsuit was filed by Maria Avila, who claimed she suffered serious injuries while working at Brown’s residence after she was allegedly attacked by one of his dogs.
According to Avila, the incident happened while she was taking out the trash, when the dog attacked her in the backyard. She argued that Brown failed to properly secure the animal, making him legally responsible for the injuries she sustained.
Brown denied any negligence, insisting that Avila had provoked the dog and was therefore responsible for what happened.
During the trial, Avila testified that the attack left her bleeding profusely and caused severe injuries. Brown also testified, explaining that he did not personally call emergency services because he feared the incident would be leaked to the media. Instead, he said someone on his team contacted 911.
Although Avila initially sought $90 million in compensation, the jury awarded her $13 million after hearing evidence from both sides.
The verdict represents another legal setback for the Grammy-winning singer, who has faced several high-profile court cases throughout his career.
