Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 35-year-old confirmed his decision during an interview with BeIN Sports after Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32.
Mahrez ends his international career with an impressive record of 40 goals and 45 assists in 119 appearances for the Desert Warriors.
The former Manchester City winger was instrumental in Algeria’s triumph at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the team win its second AFCON title.
With his international career now over, Mahrez is expected to concentrate fully on club football with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
