Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has reportedly agreed to serve as the running mate to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar ahead of the next general election.
The development was confirmed on Saturday by the immediate past chairman of the ADC in Rivers State, Leader Sampson.
When contacted about the matter, Sampson gave a brief response, saying, “Yes,” when asked whether Amaechi had accepted the vice-presidential position.
Amaechi was among the contenders in the ADC presidential primary but was defeated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who emerged as the party’s flag bearer.
Before the primary election, the former Rivers State governor had insisted that he did not obtain the party’s nomination form with the intention of later accepting a vice-presidential slot.
However, after losing the contest, Amaechi rejected the outcome of the primary, while some members of the party also alleged that the process was tilted in Atiku’s favour.
Despite the disagreement that followed the exercise, reports indicate that discussions between both politicians resumed in recent weeks as the party worked to reconcile its members and strengthen its chances ahead of the forthcoming general election.
