The All Progressives Congress has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of making statements it says could incite violence, following his remarks at an opposition summit held in Ibadan on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party strongly condemned Makinde’s reference to the violent era of “Operation Wetie,” describing it as dangerous and irresponsible given Nigeria’s current political climate.

The APC said it found it troubling that a sitting governor, who also serves as a chief security officer of his state, would evoke such a historically violent episode in political discourse, warning that the comment could heighten tensions.

The party argued that Makinde’s remarks went beyond normal political criticism, insisting they risked encouraging unrest and undermining national stability if not properly addressed.

It also called on security and intelligence agencies to take the issue seriously and respond appropriately, stressing the need to protect lives, property, and the country’s democratic order.

According to the APC, constitutional immunity does not shield public office holders from accountability when their actions or statements are seen as threatening national security.

Beyond the controversy, the ruling party also rejected suggestions that Nigeria is moving toward a one-party state, dismissing the claim as misleading and politically motivated.

It attributed such narratives to internal challenges within opposition parties, including leadership disputes, factional divisions, and what it described as poor organisational cohesion.
