Popular comedian AY Makun has opened up about an experience that made him reflect on the true purpose of the church, particularly for people facing difficult moments in life.
The actor revealed that he stopped attending church for a period, not because he had abandoned his Christian faith, but because he was trying to cope with the impact of negative reports about him that spread online. He explained that he chose to stay away to avoid becoming the focus of gossip or judgment during worship.
According to AY, he later began attending another church, where he received a warm welcome from the pastor, the pastor’s family and church leaders. Feeling embraced, he believed he had finally found a place where he could worship in peace.
However, his excitement was short-lived after he was initially invited to participate in a church programme, only to later be informed that the invitation had been cancelled due to concerns over how his involvement might be viewed by the public.
While he said he respected the church’s decision, AY questioned whether public perception should outweigh faith, forgiveness and restoration in a place of worship.
Sharing his thoughts, he wrote:
“There’s something that has been on my mind, and I want to ask a very simple question. Who is the church really for?
For some time now, I stopped attending church. Not because I stopped believing in God. I was actually navigating a very personal season.
A negative narrative was put out there on the blogs against me, and I chose to step back quietly…
AY concluded by reaffirming his faith in Jesus Christ, stressing that the church should be a place where people can seek grace and restoration regardless of their circumstances. He ended his message by repeating the question: “Who is the church really for?”
