British actor David Jonsson has been confirmed as the new face of Black Panther, marking the first time the iconic superhero role has been recast since the passing of Chadwick Boseman.
The announcement came during Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, where the studio also revealed that Black Panther 3 will hit cinemas on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, 32, is set to portray Prince T’Challa II, better known as Toussaint, the son of T’Challa and Nakia. The character was introduced as a child in the final scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and will now take centre stage as the next generation of Wakanda’s protector.
The actor has built a growing reputation with standout roles in Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, the BBC/HBO drama Industry, and Rye Lane.
Chadwick Boseman, who made the role of T’Challa famous, died in 2020 at the age of 43 after privately battling colon cancer. Following his death, Marvel chose not to replace him, instead passing the Black Panther mantle to Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, in Wakanda Forever.
Wright is expected to return in the third installment alongside Winston Duke as M’Baku, while Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in an undisclosed role.
