Belgium’s struggles at the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued on Sunday as they were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Iran in Group G, missing another chance to record their first victory of the tournament.
After drawing 1-1 with Egypt in their opening game, the Red Devils once again failed to convert their dominance into goals in Los Angeles, where they controlled much of the contest but came up against a resolute Iranian defence and an inspired goalkeeper.
Belgium created numerous opportunities, firing 20 shots during the match, but Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was in superb form. The shot-stopper produced several key saves, including a brilliant stop in the 87th minute to deny Maxim De Cuyper and keep the scores level.
Iran had moments of promise themselves and briefly celebrated what they thought was the opening goal when Mehdi Taremi found the net from a set-piece situation. However, the effort was disallowed after the striker was flagged offside.
Belgium’s task became even more difficult in the 66th minute when defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card after bringing down an Iranian player following an error at the back.
Despite going down to 10 men, Belgium continued to push for a winner late on. Dodi Lukebakio and Matias Fernandez-Pardo both came close during stoppage time, but Iran defended stubbornly to secure an important point.
The draw leaves Belgium and Iran on two points each after two group matches. While Belgium have managed just one goal so far in the competition, Iran remain unbeaten and in a strong position heading into their final group fixture.
For Belgium, it was another frustrating night marked by missed chances and attacking inefficiency. Iran, meanwhile, will be encouraged by their disciplined display as they continue their bid for a place in the knockout rounds.
