Canada secured the first FIFA World Cup finals victory in their history in emphatic fashion, thrashing Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver to move to the brink of the knockout stage. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by a worrying injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné that left head coach Jesse Marsch visibly distressed on the sidelines.

The co-hosts were already in complete control of the contest, leading 3-0 and enjoying a numerical advantage, when disaster struck in the second half. Koné collided with Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo while contesting a loose ball and remained on the turf for several minutes as medical personnel rushed to his aid.

Madibo was initially shown a yellow card, but the decision was upgraded to a red after a VAR review. Koné eventually left the pitch on a stretcher, though he managed to sit up and acknowledge the roaring home supporters as he was carried around the stadium while receiving treatment.

Before the incident, Canada had produced a ruthless display. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a clinical finish, while Jonathan David doubled the lead 13 minutes later. Qatar’s problems deepened in the 33rd minute when Homam El Amin was sent off for bringing down Tajon Buchanan.

David struck again in first-half stoppage time to send Canada into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Despite concerns over Koné’s condition dominating the second half, Canada maintained their intensity. Nathan Saliba curled in a superb free-kick in the 63rd minute to make it 4-0 and paid tribute to his injured teammate by lifting Koné’s jersey in celebration.

Canada added a fifth goal 15 minutes from time when Qatar defender Mohammad Al Mannai turned Buchanan’s effort into his own net.

David then completed a sensational hat-trick in stoppage time, reacting quickest to Buchanan’s shot and firing past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada to seal a memorable night for Canada, whose historic victory was tempered by uncertainty over Koné’s fitness.
